Pose is a community based project between educator and photographer Kamal Badhey and local partners in Arusha Tanzania. Kamal was the site coordinator for Duke University's Civic Engagement Program, LTP Tanzania. The collaboration was initiated as an after-school program for 15 young girls boarding at the Arusha School. It evolved into a collaborative project involving local educators, designers and tailors including LTP Tanzania Director, Pelle Shaibu, I Heartz Collective, Kivo Sewing and Training Center, and local designer Shafi Hussein.
The after-school class involved students drawing clothes of their family, looking at patterns of khanga and kitenge, as well as using their imagination to make their own fashion line. With the assistance of local tailors and designers, their sketches were materialized into fashion. From the first day of class, the pose and the coming into one's body was used as a tool to build body confidence in both students and educator.
